How to Find Your Ring Size at Home
Do you know all of your ring sizes, or have you ever wondered how to work them out yourself at home?
Many people know their ring finger size, but did you know that each finger can be completely a different size? It’s also very common for your dominant hand to be slightly larger than the other. E.g. the ring sizes on my right hand are slightly bigger than those on my left!
A Simple Method You Can Do At Home
One of the easiest ways to measure your ring size at home is by using a piece of non‑stretchy string, thread, or even dental floss.
Here’s how to do it:
- Wrap the string comfortably around the finger where the ring will sit. Make sure it’s snug, it should feel comfortable but not too tight.
- Use a pen to mark where the string overlaps.
- Lay the string flat and measure the length with a ruler in millimetres (mm).
This measurement is the circumference of your finger. - Use the measurement to find your ring size based on the sizing system of where you are.

Using this method allows you to measure each finger individually, helping you to achieve the best possible fit for each one.

Ring Size FAQs
What if my measurement falls between two sizes?
If your measurement sits between two sizes, it’s usually best to size up for comfort so it’s not too tight. Sometimes handcrafted rings may be an in-between size, so I will include in the listing details if it is between two.
Does finger size change during the day?
Yes – fingers can swell up at any time of the day due to heat or exercise. Mine swell up more when I am sleeping, so be careful if sleeping in a ring!
Is this method accurate?
This is a reliable at home method, using the UK ring sizing system. But for a more precise fit, you may want to order a ring sizing set online or see a professional.
